Which scooter brand is right for me?

MGP Madd Scooter, Bestial Wolf and Chilli Scooter at MOREBOARDS

Opinions often differ when it comes to choosing the right scooter brand. The market has now become much larger. We at Moreboards have specialized in the brands MGP, Bestial Wolf and Chilli. This means we can guarantee our customers quality and a fair price. Each of the three brands offers several models in their range. Whether you're a complete beginner or a ruthless professional, you'll find the right scooter for every level with us.

Madd Scooter

Maddgear, or MGP for short, comes from the USA and is certainly one of the big players in the industry. MGP scooters are probably the lightest on the market. The low weight is perfect for faster turns, higher jumps and a more comfortable carrying weight. Despite the weight advantage over other scooter brands, MGP scooters are still characterized by very good power transmission and stability. An MGP stunt scooter is perfect for shredding in any skate park. Well-known models from MGP are the Pro, the Team and the two top models such as the Extreme and Nitro.

Bestial Wolf

Bestial Wolf is a Spanish brand and the guys behind the brand are now old hands in the scooter business. Bestial Wolf models are a bit heavier than other manufacturers, this is due to the more robust material on the bar and in all other components. These properties make the Bestial Wolf scooters very stable, from the "beginner models" to the finely tuned professional model, and enable excellent power transmission. When choosing a new scooter, your desired riding style is of course also important. More fast tricks or would you prefer really big jumps with full stability? Bestial Wolf's top sellers for years have been the Booster for scooter newbies, the model for the ambitious scooter rider and the dangerous-sounding Killer for the daring full-time professional.

Chilli Scooter

The individual scooter components

Scooter Components

Handlebar - Bar

The size of the handlebars, the bar, is crucial for both stability and power transmission. The bar can also have a big impact on the weight. The wider the bar, the more power is transmitted and the more stability is guaranteed. The construction of a bar is essentially simple.

A horizontal and vertical tube are welded together like a T. The vertical tube is often curved, also called a "cross tube". This provides even more stability. The lower end of the bar has a slot to ensure full grip on the fork through the screwed clamp.

Grips

Scooter grips are actually the same grips as those on a BMX bike. While BMX grips typically have a raised end, scooter grips do not. Due to the great similarity, grips from BMX manufacturers can also be used on stunt scooters.

The most important difference is in the material. There are hard handles and soft handles. The soft grips, usually with grooves, are more comfortable, while the hard ones don't wear out as quickly. Everyone should find out for themselves what suits them better. Another thing worth mentioning is the foam handles. These certainly have their advantages, but are hardly used anymore.

TIP: When fitting new grips, it is a good idea to spray the handlebars generously with hairspray beforehand. This makes it easy to put the grips on and adjust them. Once the hairspray has dried, the grips sit perfectly because they are glued to the handlebars.

Clamps

The clamp clamps the handlebars to the fork of your stunt scooter. It is only used for fastening and sits at the very front directly above the headset. For this reason, the weight of a clamp is of secondary importance and has little effect on the balance of your scooter.

Scooter clamps are available in different designs. Double, triple and quad clamps are common on the market. The name or design of the clamp refers to the number of screws used to attach the clamp.

Depending on the compression, it can be practical to use a triple or quad clamp. This is the case if the handlebar is only held by the clamp. For other systems where the handlebar is also screwed on from below, a double clamp is completely sufficient. The most important thing is the bottom two screws of the scooter clamp, which mainly clamp the slot in the handlebar.

TIP: A clamp should always be screwed from bottom to top. Tighten the screws on your clamp firmly but carefully.

Headset

The scooter headset consists roughly of 2 parts: an upper ball bearing and a lower ball bearing, which are located above and below the downtube. Of course, there are other parts that complete the headset.

There are two main types of headsets. Standard and Integrated Headsets. Within the standard headsets there are two further types. Threaded headsets and Treadless headsets.

Threaded headsets are only used on entry-level scooters. They are the cheapest. The headset is screwed to the fork, which also requires a threaded fork, and is then attached to the downtube. This type of headset is not as smooth and the bearings are not compressed enough due to their installation. After the bearing is screwed tightly to the downtube via the fork, the headset is secured with a lock nut.

Threadless headsets work in a similar way, but are not screwed onto the downtube. A separate compression system is required, which allows more compression to be applied to the bearings. The advantage is that they run much more smoothly. The lower bearing is placed on a spacer ring that is placed on the fork. The upper bearing is mounted on the downtube and fitted with a compression ring.

The best and most functional headsets are the integrated headsets. Integrated headsets are the latest and most advanced headsets for scooters. Only two bearings (top and bottom) are pressed into the integrated recesses in the deck (integrated). The compression ring must not be forgotten here either. In order to apply the required pressure to the headset, a separate compression system is also required for the integrated headset.

TIP: Taking care of your headset will significantly increase its lifespan. Always check the compression and tighten it regularly if necessary. You can also remove and clean a headset from time to time. Important: Grease it before reassembling the headset.

Fork - Fork

The fork is an extremely important part of your scooter. Not only because it holds your front wheel, but also because it is an important connecting piece. The fork is largely responsible for the hold and compression of your scooter. Depending on the compression system, the fork holds the headset, deck and handlebars together. The different types of forks are crucial for the compression system to be selected and the right handlebar. There are threaded and threadless forks.

Threaded forks are rarely used anymore. Only on entry-level scooters because they are much cheaper. Threaded forks are usually made of steel and are therefore quite heavy compared to other models.

Threadless forks, on the other hand, are often made of aluminum and the current models are CNC machined and made from one piece. This makes these forks very light and stable. The forks differ in their construction to suit the different compression systems. Most models have an internal thread or, for example, a star nut through which the compression can be screwed. With ICS, the fork does not need a thread because the screw is connected to the handlebar.

To install the wheels in your fork, you usually need spacers. These are sleeves that are inserted between the fork and the ball bearing. This means that the wheel has no play and pressure is applied to the bearing in the right place. There are now some manufacturers who build their forks in such a way that these spacers are no longer necessary, but are integrated into the fork.

TIP: The size of the wheels must match the fork. When buying a new wheel, always check that the wheel has the right diameter!

Decks

The scooter deck. Probably the most important part due to its great influence on the handling and the long-term load. Decks are differentiated by their length and width and also by the angle of the head tube (attachment of the fork and handlebars).

Choosing the right deck always depends on the rider's style. The wider and longer the deck, the heavier it is. This gives it more stability, which in turn slows down the rotation when doing tricks. Everyone has to find out for themselves what is most comfortable for them.

Grip tape

The grip tape that you know from a skateboard provides more grip on the scooter deck. There are pre-cut grip tapes in many colors and designs from all scooter brands such as MGP, Chilli or Bestial Wolf. However, you can also simply use any pattern from a skateboard grip tape . Simply cut and stick on! This gives you a much larger selection of designs.

TIP: To apply the grip tape, you first need to clean the deck. It's best to do this with spirit or alcohol. Then you can stick the tape on from back to front. The grip tape should ideally not form any bubbles. You can do this by slowly and in small steps applying the grip tape to the deck. If you cut your own grip tape, the easiest way is to stick the old tape to the back of the new one and cut around the outside, or trace the outline first. If you don't have any old tape as a template, remove the brake and the rear wheel and trace the outline of your deck. Now cut the grip tape about 2mm smaller than drawn.

Brake - Brake

The brake is for speed control. Here too, there are differences in the material and function. For example, there are brakes made of steel and aluminum. Although aluminum brakes save weight, they wear out much faster at high speeds and often come with a return spring. Steel brakes are used as flex brakes. The brake is bent downwards by standing on it.

Attention: not all brakes fit all scooters!

TIP: You must be careful not to use the brakes on your scooter as if they were a bicycle brake. Constant use of the brakes will cause them to overheat. The risk of overheating is particularly high with steel brakes. This can cause your wheels to break more quickly or result in a flat spot or brake plate.

Wheels

Wheels influence the look and handling of your scooter. Most brands offer their wheels in sizes 100mm, 110mm and 120mm. Technically speaking, a 100mm wheel is a little slower than a 110mm or 120mm wheel, but a little more maneuverable and direct. A wheel, no matter which one, consists of a rim or core and the tread.

The core can be made of aluminum or plastic. However, plastic wheels are now only used on entry-level scooters, if at all, to save costs, as they break easily. Aluminum cores are available as full cores (rims made of solid material) and spoked cores (spoked rims). The spoked core wheels are lighter than full core wheels because they save on material.

The running surface is made of polyurethane. The running surfaces can vary in quality and degree of hardness. The degree of hardness is given in A and for scooter wheels is between 70A and 90A. A higher number means a harder wheel. Harder wheels have the advantage that they wear out more slowly or less. A soft wheel, on the other hand, is more comfortable to ride and has more grip on the ground. Similar to skateboarding. We recommend hard wheels for the street rather than for the indoor skate park!

TIP: Which wheel you ride depends on your own preferences and the options your stunt scooter offers, which means: Wheel, Folk and Brake must fit together!

Pegs

Scooter pegs are extensions of the axles and are used for grinding and other tricks. Grinding would not be possible without pegs. They are generally made of aluminum and come in different lengths; the existing axle length must be taken into account here.

IMPORTANT TIPS FROM THE PROFESSIONAL

  • It is best never to ride in the rain, otherwise the ball bearings and rims of the wheels and the fork can rust.
  • If the bar or other components become loose, it is important to check and tighten all screws.
  • If something breaks, which happens even in the best houses, we are available with spare parts, advice and assistance!
  • Suitable protective equipment is of course a given when riding a scooter. Fortunately, wearing a helmet, elbow, knee and wrist guards has become cool in recent years ;-)
  • With the right protection like that from TSG, you'll no longer be afraid of getting injured. So you can concentrate fully on new tricks and rock out!
  • Take your time in your skate park and watch other scooter riders. Often everyone does the same trick a little differently, which can often be the solution for you.
