Good to know

When sustainability was not yet a buzzword, the French Brand Picture Organic Clothing with its founding in 2008, laid the foundation for its success story over the last 12 years. Since then, Picture Organic Clothing has made a name for itself in the areas of snowboarding, skiing, surfing and outdoor as Clothing manufacturers which is made with sustainable, recycled and environmentally friendly materials from organic farming. The driving force behind the clear line is the idealism of the three founders Julien Durant, Jérémy Rochette and Vincent André.

philosophy

“Ride, Protect & Share” are three words that symbolize the philosophy and ideology of Picture Organic Clothing. Picture always makes clear statements and thus new impulses in the industry. The Love of nature and the Fun on the mountain has the same importance and priority for Picture Organic Clothing and runs like a common thread through the entire production process of the collections at Picture Organic Clothing.

As the textile industry accounts for 10% of global CO2 emissions and the climate crisis worsens, we all need to work towards a turnaround. That is why Picture has been striving to continuously reduce its environmental impact since its founding in 2008. The commitment to sustainable, ethical and environmentally friendly solutions covers all areas: from the supply chain to production and shipping. In order to minimize the impact of the business on the climate and people, Picture to end dependence on fossil fuels. Minimizing environmental impact, controlling growth, renewing conventional production models and promoting responsible consumption - these are the cornerstones of this evolution.

engagement

Since the company was founded in 2008, Picture has been fighting vehemently against climate change . All of the brand's past and future actions, innovations and economic activities aim to drastically reduce emissions in all work and production cycles and increase CO2 sequestration capacity. Picture's big and ambitious goal is to achieve climate neutrality.

Picture is a member of the Fair Wear Foundation . The aim of the Fair Wear Foundation is to continuously improve the working conditions for the people who produce the products of Picture and other members of the Fair Wear Foundation, that is, fair wages and good working conditions . At Picture Organic Clothing, this applies to 100% of all factories and production sites.

Picture has, alongside other projects such as Picture For Good committed to working closely with factories that use renewable energy sources, as the electricity used in manufacturing accounts for a large proportion of global carbon emissions.

Picture Organic Clothing has been officially certified as B CORP Company B CORP is the highest honor given to companies that are committed to making environmental and social responsibility an integral part of their business. This has been achieved by following and living by the following motto: Don't try to be the best company in the world, try to be the best company FOR the world.

Since Picture was founded in 2008, all lifestyle products made of organic cotton have been manufactured in the Seyfeli clothing factory in Izmir, Turkey. The organic cotton used is GOTS certified and also has the ORGANIC 100 and that ORGANIC BLENDID seal .

How much water do I need to produce 1 T-shirt?
conventional cotton 8,207 litres of water
Organic cotton 704 litres of water
A T-shirt made from organic cotton saves 7,503 litres of water during production!

Recycled materials

Picture Organic Clothing works mostly with recycled materials. 69% of the polyester that Picture uses to produce functional clothing comes from recycled PET bottles. By using these techniques, Picture saves 40% of CO2 emissions annually. The production of technical clothing for skiing and snowboarding has been Picture's core business since 2008. This is why the savings in CO2 emissions in this area are so important for achieving climate neutrality in the near future. The polyester used by Picture is Bluesign and Global Recycled certified.

Organically grown materials

Did you know that the traditional method of producing technical fabrics is primarily to extract oil? Polyester, the most commonly used material, comes directly from petroleum.

Picture uses materials from organic farming. The main focus at Picture Organic Clothing is on the production of new technical fabrics from plants in order to eliminate any use of petroleum-based materials. Conventional technical polyester fabric (PET), which is required to produce functional clothing, consists of monoethylene glycol (30%) and terephthalic acid (70%), both petrochemical compounds. Petroleum is required for production. In order to no longer require petroleum for the production of polyester, Picture Organic Clothing is increasingly relying on Organic sourcing .

What is organic sourcing? In the case of a technical jacket, this means producing a fabric partly made from plant material such as sugar cane or castor beans. In general, plants containing sucrose (beets, sugar cane...) or starch (wheat, corn...) can be converted into bio-monoethylene glycol (bio-MEG) to replace conventional petroleum-based MEG. Petroleum is then no longer needed...

The Reorientation of Picture’s strategy towards organic sourcing means a major commitment to the environment and the elimination of the extremely polluting dependence on fossil fuels: in this case oil. Picture's short-term goal is to expand the use of organically grown materials throughout its technical clothing line. 30% of Picture Outerwear Collection will be produced from organic polyester in 2020/2021.

Reused materials

From the technical fabrics, Picture takes the waste generated during the manufacturing process and uses it in the linings for some of the products (jackets, sleeping bags). Each lining is a unique mix of colors, chosen at random.

Animal materials

The wool and leather used by Picture Organic Clothing are 100% humanely treated and contain no toxic chemicals.

PFC-free water repellent treatment

Since the 2017/18 season, Picture only offers functional materials that PFC-free treatment for water-repellent properties PFCs (perfluorinated chemicals) have been used in the outdoor industry for decades. The advantage: this method gives technical fabrics water-repellent properties. The disadvantage: these components can cause health problems for humans and animals.

For many years, the C8 (long-chain fluorocarbon-based) method was widely used by outdoor brands to obtain water-repellent properties in their functional materials. The C8 treatment has long been valued for its high efficiency and durability. But...

The Greenpeace made it in 2011 with her The "Detox" campaign has awakened many clothing companies, leading them to acknowledge the problem, break with the usual production cycles and research and develop new environmentally friendly methods. The Greenpeace report listed the environmental damage caused by the use of the C8 chain, more specifically the negative effects of its associated components: PFOA / PFOS.

This extremely environmentally harmful components are released during the manufacturing process, but also during the use of PFC-containing products in the environment, such as snowboarding, skiing or hiking. Once these extremely toxic components are released into the environment, they break down very slowly. PFC traces have been found in rivers, glaciers and nearby production factories. You can health problems for humans and animals cause (endocrine disrupting chemicals, hormonal imbalances, carcinogens).

This Test report from Greenpeace encouraged many companies and brands to stop treating their functional materials with PFCs despite their high efficiency and functionality. In 2013, Picture found a partial solution to the problem: the C6 method (shorter PFC chain). However, this solution was only temporary, as it only solved part of the problem. In the long term, it was not a 100% satisfactory solution.

That's why Picture teamed up with other brands, the LiLian factory and engineers to find a real solution to the problem. The challenge: offer a PFC-free, functional yet durable water repellent treatment. After all, who would buy an environmentally friendly technical product that doesn't offer durable protection due to its poor water repellency? After extensive testing, a solution was found: Teflon EcoElite by Chemours. This treatment is now applied to all Picture Organic Clothing technical products (jackets, trousers, gloves).

Teflon EcoElite offers three times the durability of regular PFC-free treatments and is made from Bluesign-certified components from renewable sources.

The materials used 100% at Picture...
Organic material 92% organic cotton, -46% CO2 emissions
Recycled materials 69% polyester from PET bottles, -40% CO2 emissions
Organically grown materials Bio-sourcing method, bio-polyester, no more petroleum
Reused materials Production waste is reused
