WELCOME TO FUNCTIONAL CLOTHING 1×1 PART I

This time we would like to briefly explain to you what you should definitely pay attention to and know when buying functional clothing and technical clothing. We will also give you some Explain technical terms .
In any outdoor sports you are shamelessly exposed to the weather. Wind, weather and temperatures can change quickly and ruin your day if you are not dressed properly.

The right functional clothing not only helps us in different weather conditions “perform” , but also has a massive impact on our well-being on the mountain.

Freezing up high is no fun and in the worst case scenario your motivation level drops massively .

To help you avoid having your day on the mountain ruined, here is part 1 of this “how to” series, covering the materials used in the production of functional clothing and what features they have.

LET’S START

MATERIALS

If you go through the Manufacturers selected by us of functional clothing such as , Nike , Wear Colour , etc..., you will quickly notice that dozens of different textiles for the Fight against wind, weather and moisture Some of these textiles may have fancy names, but they are essentially nothing more than derivatives of polyester or nylon materials.
Some of our guided Brands rely on alternatives and use sustainable materials. Here it is safe Picture We are trying to select brands with these environmentally friendly materials for you!

But what is so special about polyester and nylon?

POLYESTER

- is the “go-to” fiber-reinforced plastic for technical clothing.
- Polyester is characterized by its outstanding features out of:
- It is Robust, does not shrink or stretch, dries quickly and cannot mold .

Tightly woven polyester is also water resistant - a fantastic material for the production of functional clothing. Nevertheless, functional fabrics still need some kind of DWR coating (durable water repellent). The DWR coating not only enhances the characteristics of the polyester composite, but only by combining a DWR coating with a breathable layer does a climate fabric emerge (as in the finished functional clothing).

This feature of the DWR coating also occurs in nature and was certainly a model for the implementation of this ingenious function. Polyester fiber composites are manufactured in different thicknesses – depending thicker the material, the stronger the expression the above mentioned and desired Characteristics.

In our stores or in Online shop It is best to simply rely on the waterproof/breathability ratings provided by the manufacturer.

NYLON

is an exceptional Robust material that has little absorbency and also a certain elasticity owns.
Nylon belongs to the group of polyamides and can be easily dyed and washed easily Due to its high resilience Nylon is a frequently and popular synthetic fiber in the outerwear segment. Similar to polyester fabrics, nylon fibers also need an additional coating in order to achieve ideal usability in the functional area.

Nylon fibers are also manufactured in different thicknesses, which is why we often talk about different material weights (e.g. 60g polyester). Here, too, it is best to rely on the manufacturer's information regarding waterproofness and breathability.

MICROFIBERS

are made from nylon and/or polyester microfibers, whereby Extremely fine fibers are woven into a highly functional, extremely durable, feather-light, extremely water-repellent and windproof fabric . As you can see, there is no shortage of superlatives.
Microfibers are only used in the high-price segment for high-tech outdoor clothing used. If you only go out on the mountain when the weather is nice, you might not necessarily need such highly technical material. If you prefer to spend time in the countryside and hike a lot or even go on touring skis or splitboards, you should therefore consider how many layers and what materials you wear on your body.

However, after this extremely technical article, we are sure that this information will be of benefit to you not only when purchasing functional clothing, but when purchasing technical clothing in general.

We will dedicate our next article to topics such as water column, breathability and various features.

We will be happy to welcome you in our 26 stores throughout Austria available to answer any questions.
Stop by, get inspired and

See you next time,
